A total of 155 candidates from Ghana’s 16 regions have filed nominations to contest for positions in the Council of State elections, set to take place today, February 11.
These elections, a vital component of Ghana’s governance structure, will determine regional representatives who will advise President John Dramani Mahama on key national issues.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the list of aspirants consists of 145 men and 10 women, highlighting a significant gender gap in the contest. While the number of female candidates remains relatively low, their participation marks progress in enhancing women’s representation in national decision-making.
The nomination process required candidates to meet specific eligibility criteria set by the EC, including proof of Ghanaian citizenship, good standing in society, and fulfillment of all administrative requirements before the nomination deadline.
Unlike parliamentary and presidential elections, the Council of State selection does not involve the general public. Instead, it follows an Electoral College system, where representatives from each district serve as electors. Each of Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies nominates two representatives, who then vote to determine the final members of the Council.
These electors play a crucial role in ensuring a fair and democratic selection process, assessing candidates based on their experience, expertise, and ability to contribute meaningfully to national governance.
The Council of State, established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, is a constitutionally mandated advisory body that provides guidance to the President on policy formulation and national affairs. Its role includes offering expert advice on governance, national security, economic development, and other critical state matters.
