Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has reiterated that missing a crucial penalty at the 2010 FIFA World Cup still haunts him.
According to Ghana’s all-time top scorer, that game against Uruguay in South Africa gives him nightmares.
“The last-gasp penalty against Uruguay still haunts me and I couldn’t sleep all night”, he told TV3.
“It was a disaster, it was crazy. I couldn’t sleep all night and all I was telling myself was to get another chance because I knew I could redeem myself even if not football, and something else,” the former Sunderland striker said.
Gyan, 35, also revealed how hard he cried the whole night till the morning.
“I cried the whole night till the next morning and in the morning I was calm because I couldn’t cry anymore”, he added.
Gyan still believes he can one way or another redeem himself to make amends for the missed penalty that stopped Ghana from becoming the first African country to play in the last four of FIFA’s elite competition.
“I still hope I can make amends but if even I am unable to, I hope my children would be able to make amends”, he noted.
Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals from 109 appearances and also the African player with most goals at the FIFA Mundial with six goals in three different World Cups.
