Dr. Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has urged the government to act quickly and firmly against illegal mining, warning that failure to do so in the early years of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration could spell defeat in the fight.
In an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on May 1, Dr. Ashigbey emphasized that the battle against galamsey must be prioritized before political focus shifts toward the next election cycle.
“We have a short window to take serious action. If we don’t tackle galamsey within the first two years, political campaigns will take over, and the fight may be lost,” he stated.
He also encouraged professional groups across the country to support the media’s ongoing efforts by holding the government accountable and urging it to take firm steps to end illegal mining.
“It’s time for professional bodies to get involved. We in the media can’t do it alone. We must speak out—praise the President when progress is made, and point out the failures when they come,” Dr. Ashigbey noted.
His comments follow rising concerns over the damage caused by illegal mining to Ghana’s environment and public health, particularly in forest areas and water sources.
Dr. Ashigbey has long championed the need for collaboration between government, civil society, the media, and citizens to bring a lasting solution to one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges.
