Samuel Atta Akyea, legal counsel for former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has warned that his client may be forced to reveal sensitive national security information as part of his legal defence.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom on Tuesday, May 13, Atta Akyea emphasized the need for careful handling of the case, due to its potential implications for national security.

He stated, “The way national security matters are being raised, he should come to terms with it. That is what he was trying to do. He was not saying that he is afraid to defend himself by saying that they are pushing him into areas of national security, and when push comes to shove, he has to defend himself.”

The lawyer further noted that there may be consequences if such classified matters are exposed in court. “Later, someone will ask why a national intelligence officer is trying to bring national security matters into the public domain when he has sworn an oath,” he said.

Despite a court order that required Adu-Boahene to be held for only seven working days, he remains in police custody. The former intelligence chief, who faces serious charges including stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, was first remanded on Friday, May 2. The initial remand followed accusations of interfering with witnesses.

Atta Akyea informed the court that after the expiration of the original remand period, his client was arrested again over a separate issue, keeping him in detention.

The unfolding case has raised legal and national security concerns, as it now appears that defending the charges may involve matters usually kept from the public eye.
