Julian Mawuse Cobbinah, Chairman of the NDC Youth Manifesto Committee, has disclosed that a future John Mahama-led administration is committed to supporting the establishment of at least 10,000 youth-driven businesses every year. The initiative is part of a broader plan to tackle youth unemployment and stimulate economic growth across the country.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, May 4, Cobbinah highlighted the transformative impact such a policy could have if implemented transparently and equitably.
“The John Mahama Government believes that it can help create 10,000 new businesses every year, that are created by young people. If these businesses are providing 10 each employed young persons, and we are doing it for the next four years, that is 40,000 times 10, and that is for only direct jobs, and that is very massive,” he explained.
Cobbinah stressed the importance of fairness in the implementation of the programme, warning against politicizing business support schemes as seen in the past.
“The people who will get the support must merit it. In the past, we have wrecked our support system for businesses, and it has become like a partisan cradle… I think we must stop that. What the government wants to do is to have a credible regime and process in the awarding of the support to these businesses,” he stated.
He further added that a system based on merit will ensure that only capable and deserving young entrepreneurs benefit, which will lead to long-term economic success and job creation.
The initiative, known as the Adwumawura Programme, will target individuals aged 18 to 35. It is expected to play a key role in the NDC’s job creation agenda by encouraging entrepreneurship, supporting innovation, and strengthening the private sector as a driver of employment.
