Ghana’s hopes for a successful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign took another hit on Monday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Niger in their second Group F qualifier.
The match, held at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco, saw the Black Stars struggle to find consistency, eventually sharing points with a determined Niger side.
Niger made the first threatening move, with Boubacar Hainikoye unleashing a powerful long-range shot that forced a good save from Lawrence Ati-Zigi in the 17th minute.
Despite Niger’s pressure, Ghana managed to break the deadlock just before halftime. Alidu Seidu’s effort from outside the box took a deflection and found its way past the Nigerien goalkeeper, giving the Black Stars a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Ghana had several chances to extend their advantage. Mohammed Kudus and Inaki Williams both came close, but the standout performance of Niger’s goalkeeper, Abiboulaye Hainikoye, kept them at bay.
Niger, however, remained persistent and their efforts were rewarded in the 81st minute. Oumar Sako capitalized on a corner kick, heading home after a scramble in the box to equalize, dashing Ghana’s hopes of securing all three points.
With just one point from two games, Ghana’s chances of qualifying are now under serious threat. They face a crucial match against Sudan in October, where they must improve significantly if they are to keep their qualification dreams alive.
