The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has voluntarily presented himself to assist in an investigation into an alleged confrontation with a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Police, it was revealed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had launched a probe into claims that the Effutu MP physically assaulted a uniformed officer at the entrance of Parliament House during the protest.
The inquiry followed a formal request from the CID to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin. In response, the Speaker directed Afenyo-Markin to fully cooperate with investigators. Honouring the directive, Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police on Wednesday, May 7, to aid in the ongoing investigation.
In a surprising development, the Police disclosed that a separate but related complaint had also been lodged — this time by Hon. Afenyo-Markin himself. According to the Police, the Minority Leader filed a counter-petition alleging that he was assaulted by the same officer involved in the original allegation.
Detailing his version of events, Afenyo-Markin claimed the incident occurred as he led demonstrators to submit a petition at Parliament House, advocating for enhanced judicial independence. As he neared a police barricade, he alleged that a uniformed officer, identified as Constable Forson, “struck him forcefully on the left side of his chest,” causing him to feel dazed and struggle to breathe.
He added that he was quickly assisted by parliamentary security and some of the demonstrators and taken to a rest area to recover before resuming the demonstration. According to Afenyo-Markin, “the officer fled the scene shortly after the incident,” prompting concerns about accountability.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that both the original complaint and the counter-allegation are being investigated thoroughly. Updates will be shared as the case develops.
