Former Roads and Highways Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has firmly denied claims made by Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, that the Akufo-Addo administration constructed only 673 kilometres of new roads during its eight-year tenure.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Asenso-Boakye accused Agbodza of distorting the facts and asserted that the Akufo-Addo government had constructed a total of 13,624 kilometres of roads from 2017 to 2025.

“Honorable Speaker, let me put on record that as of December 2024, per the transition report, the Akufo-Addo government had constructed 13,624 kilometres of road. This figure is against the 4,630 kilometres of road constructed by the previous government in eight years,” he stated.

Asenso-Boakye emphasized that this achievement included a variety of road infrastructure projects, such as asphalt overlays, re-graveling, reconstruction, and bridges. He argued that Agbodza’s focus on only the 673 kilometres of newly constructed roads was an attempt to undermine the comprehensive efforts of the NPP government.

He explained, “While new road construction was a key aspect of our work, other components such as asphalt overlays and re-graveling were equally critical to improving the road network across the country.”

To illustrate his point, Asenso-Boakye cited examples of asphalt overlay projects in cities such as Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Takoradi, which significantly enhanced road quality and eased transportation challenges. He also highlighted the completion of approximately 6,000 kilometres of gravel roads, particularly in rural areas, where better road networks are vital for connecting communities and improving accessibility.

“Many of us represent rural communities and understand the importance of gravelling in linking people and improving accessibility in these areas. These projects are crucial and cannot be dismissed simply because they are not new road constructions,” he stressed.

In addition to gravel roads and asphalt overlays, Asenso-Boakye noted that 1,665 kilometres of roads were reconstructed or upgraded, and 35 bridges were built nationwide under the NPP government’s transformative infrastructure agenda.

He concluded by urging Parliament and the public to acknowledge the holistic nature of road infrastructure development carried out under the Akufo-Addo administration, emphasizing that maintenance and upgrades are as vital as new road constructions in creating a robust and efficient national road network.
