Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its neglect of road maintenance over the past eight years, claiming it has led to significant deterioration of the country’s existing road network.

During his vetting on Monday, January 20, Agbodza emphasized that the maintenance of current roads should be prioritized over the construction of new ones. However, he argued that the NPP administration had significantly failed in maintaining the country’s roads, with a noticeable decline in efforts compared to previous years.

The Adaklu MP pointed to the stark contrast in figures, revealing that in 2016, Ghana successfully maintained 9,000 kilometres of roads. By 2023, under the NPP government, this number had dropped to just 3,000 kilometres, highlighting a sharp decline in road maintenance.

“The principle is that you should spend more on the maintenance of your existing roads than building new roads. Per the records we have in terms of road maintenance, things have gone bad in the last eight years,” Agbodza explained.

He further criticized the current administration’s road maintenance record, saying:
“In fact, the record maintenance we have for 2016 is unmatched till today. If you check the 2023 records, in areas where we did 9,000km, the NPP was just doing 3,000 km. So, they have really let the country down in terms of the road maintenance programme,” he stated.
