Ghanaian defender Alexander Djiku found the net after coming off the bench, but his effort was not enough to prevent Fenerbahçe from suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Rangers in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.
The 30-year-old was initially left out of Jose Mourinho’s starting XI but was called into action early in the game, replacing the injured Çağlar Söyüncü in the 16th minute.
The visitors took an early lead just six minutes into the match when Cyriel Dessers capitalized on a chance to put Rangers ahead. However, Djiku responded in style, reacting swiftly to a corner kick and firing home from close range in the 24th minute to bring the game level.
Despite Fenerbahçe’s equalizer, Czech midfielder Vaclav Černý emerged as the match-winner for Rangers, scoring twice—once in each half—to seal a 3-1 victory for the Scottish side.
With a two-goal deficit, Fenerbahçe now faces a daunting challenge in the return leg at Ibrox Stadium next week, where they must produce a strong performance to keep their Europa League hopes alive.
