Businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has shared how the almost eight years Cocoa trial has impacted his life

According to him, this long eight trial which finally came to an end was nothing short of prevailing over persecution

To him, Tuesday, January 28, 2025, is a chapter of his life that has come to a close. The state has withdrawn all charges against him, allowing him to walk away a free man.

He endured the unrelenting demands of attending court hearings from Monday to Thursday, defending himself against allegations that often seemed driven more by politics than by justice.

Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, informed the court that the state no longer saw merit in continuing with the prosecution. This decision marked the end of a grueling legal journey that traversed the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court over nearly a decade.

“This is a triumph for truth in this generation,” Alhaji Agongo said as he left the courtroom with a cautious smile. “It is a relief of great magnitude, beyond words. For almost eight years, my life was tied to these courtrooms. Starting tomorrow, this is all history. I can only say, ‘Thank you, Allah.'”

The Ordeal Begins

The legal saga, known as the Steven Opuni-Agongo trial, began in 2017 during the Akufo-Addo administration. Over the years, it devolved into a nightmare for both Alhaji Agongo and Dr. Stephen Opuni. Once celebrated for his business acumen and philanthropy, Alhaji Agongo found himself accused of fraud, money laundering, and financial impropriety—charges that many saw as a calculated attempt to destroy his reputation.

At the heart of the case was Alhaji Agongo’s role in supplying Lithovit Liquid Fertiliser to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). Farmers who had used the fertilizer testified in his defense, praising its effectiveness and sharing how it had transformed their lives. From building homes to sending children to better schools, Lithovit had a measurable impact on cocoa farmers. Yet, despite their passionate endorsements, these testimonies were largely ignored as the prosecution pressed on.

The case was riddled with allegations of unfairness, with Alhaji Agongo often describing the courtroom as a “theater of injustice.” When Justice Kwasi Anokye Gyimah ruled for a retrial due to procedural concerns, he was promptly transferred—a move that fueled perceptions of systemic bias against Alhaji Agongo.

Beyond the Courtroom: Targeted Persecution

The attacks against Alhaji Agongo extended beyond the legal system. His Heritage Bank Limited, a symbol of his entrepreneurial success, was forcibly collapsed. Observers widely viewed this as an act of malice and tribalism rather than a sound business decision. Additionally, his assets were frozen, his passport seized, and government-sponsored media campaigns tarnished his reputation, isolating him from partners and clients.

Despite these challenges, Alhaji Agongo remained resilient. His philanthropic efforts continued, even as his resources were stripped away. He funded education for underprivileged students, supported disaster-stricken communities, and even built a children’s ward at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. These acts of kindness, performed in the face of adversity, were a testament to his unwavering commitment to humanity.

A Symbol of Resilience

Throughout his ordeal, Alhaji Agongo became a pillar of strength for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), providing financial support despite his own financial constraints. His media empire, the Class Media Group, became a platform for advocacy and hope, supporting the party and amplifying the voices of the marginalized.

Finally, justice began to prevail. The new Attorney General withdrew the case, declaring the state’s disinterest in continuing what many had come to see as a political vendetta. Alhaji Agongo’s vindication was more than a legal victory; it was a triumph of truth over malice, resilience over oppression, and faith over despair.

A Legacy of Hope

Alhaji Seidu Agongo’s story is one of unwavering determination in the face of relentless adversity. His journey serves as a reminder that no matter how dark the night, the dawn will always come. His resilience and faith have not only cleared his name but have also inspired countless others to stand firm against injustice.

As he steps into a future free from the burdens of the past eight years, Alhaji Agongo remains a symbol of hope. His story reminds us that truth cannot be silenced, and goodness will ultimately triumph over calculated evil. For those who have faced or are facing similar storms, his life is proof that even the most oppressive forces cannot extinguish the light of truth and integrity.
