A group of discontented youth, reportedly aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), gathered at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) headquarters to protest the recent appointment of Anthony Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General.

On January 21, President John Dramani Mahama announced Mr. Sarpong’s appointment, placing him in charge of overseeing Ghana’s tax collection and revenue mobilisation efforts. The move has been described as a critical step toward strengthening the country’s revenue systems amid mounting economic pressures.

Anthony Sarpong, a seasoned accountant and auditor, previously served as a Senior Partner at KPMG, a globally renowned auditing and consulting firm. His professional background has positioned him as a capable leader to drive fiscal reforms and help the government achieve its economic targets.

However, despite his credentials, some members of the NDC have expressed opposition to the appointment. They allege that Mr. Sarpong has affiliations with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), casting doubts on his loyalty to the ruling party’s revenue agenda. These claims have fueled concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the broader implications for the NDC’s control over key state institutions.

The protesters have called on President Mahama to reverse the decision, arguing that appointing someone perceived as sympathetic to the opposition could undermine the party’s strategic goals. According to them, the role of Commissioner-General is too critical to be entrusted to an individual whose political neutrality is in question.

This controversy reflects internal tensions within the NDC as the party navigates the delicate balance between loyalty and competence in addressing Ghana’s pressing economic challenges.

As of now, the government has not issued an official response to the demands for reconsideration of the appointment.
