The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, is set to launch a decongestion exercise starting today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

The initial phase of the operation will focus on areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. Specific locations include Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square through to Adabraka.

In an interview with Citi News on Monday, May 19, the AMA’s Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, explained that the effort would intensify along key routes such as Wato Junction, King Tackie Tawiah School, and Cow Lane.

“Our main priority is to tackle congestion around the AMA Head Office and its immediate surroundings. We’ll also be addressing locations near Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel,” Ankrah noted.

Ahead of the campaign, AMA Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, met with street vendors in the Central Business District (CBD), encouraging them to cooperate with authorities.

This exercise is part of a larger effort to enhance cleanliness and maintain order in the capital.

“I appeal to everyone to support us in keeping the city clean and orderly. A more organised Accra benefits all of us,” Allotey said.

He also mentioned that future economic policies, such as the proposed 24-hour economy, would open up opportunities for vendors to operate at night. However, he urged them to temporarily vacate the pavements to allow the decongestion work to proceed smoothly.
