Stewart Bailey, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at AngloGold Ashanti, has reaffirmed the company’s strong dedication to ensuring that mining activities in Ghana bring meaningful and lasting benefits to local communities.
Speaking during the Mining in Motion Summit—featured on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, June 9—Bailey underscored the importance of sharing the value generated from natural resources with host communities. He cautioned that failing to do so could threaten the company’s long-term operational stability.
“We fully support the principle that the development of natural resources must deliver shared benefits,” Bailey said. “If that doesn’t happen, you risk losing your social license to operate. Let me be clear—this is something we firmly believe in.”
He identified the upstream segment of the mining sector as a vital area where local participation should be prioritized. Bailey emphasized that local suppliers and service providers must be integrated into the mining supply chain to ensure direct economic benefits for nearby communities.
“It’s not enough for communities to feel they might benefit—they must see real, measurable improvements in their lives,” he said. “This includes jobs and opportunities for local businesses to provide the goods and services needed for our operations.”
Bailey also highlighted AngloGold Ashanti’s long-standing leadership in value sharing, pointing to the company’s efforts to involve local businesses and workers in its day-to-day operations.
Reaffirming the company’s enduring presence in the country, he added, “We’ve been part of Ghana’s mining landscape for decades, and we plan to be here for decades to come. Our focus remains on working closely with our Ghanaian partners to ensure mutual success.”
