Police in the Ashanti region have invited Asawasi NDC Constituency Treasurer, following chaos that broke out at a registration center Friday, Dailymailgh.com has learnt.

Faisal Dauda aka Mallam, who himself is an agent at the registration center, was accompanied by other party executives to the Regional Police Headquarters Saturday.

“So the information is that he has been invited by the regional command to assist in investigations. For now we, together with the military will be here to maintain law and order”, an officer who wanted to remain unidentified explained to Dailymailgh.com.

Police sources say the NDC executive is alleged to be the brain behind the violence at the registration center that left at least three persons injured.

Properties including vehicles were also destroyed in the process.Police have since condemned the action describing it as lawless.

How it started

Media reports say members of the ruling New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress in the area had engaged in similar disagreements at the registration center since the start of the process.

A similar incident was reported on Thursday, June 27, after an altercation between members of the two political parties stalled the registration process for hours.

Yesterday’s development comes after the EC officials and security heads in the Ashanti Region met with leadership of the parties in the Constituency to get their members to ensure a smooth exercise.

MP accused of assault

One of the injured victims alleged that she was physically assaulted by Member of Parliament for Asawasi, when she intervened to challenge a young lady who claimed some applicants were registered at midnight at the Municipal Assembly’s office.

The office of the Member of Parliament has since denied any assault claims.

Security beefed up

Meanwhile, the injured have been treated and discharged by the Manhyia District Hospital.

A joint police and military contingent has been deployed to the center over fears of reprisal attacks.

Many would-be voters, including students from various Senior High Schools in the Municipality had thronged the registration center to take part in the exercise Saturday afternoon.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku, had earlier visited the area and has assured of improved security at the center.

The command has also warned that it will deal with anybody who foment trouble.
