The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has announced plans to meet with the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to receive an update on the cases being investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
While acknowledging that the OSP operates as an independent entity, Dr. Ayine emphasized the need for his office to remain informed about its ongoing cases.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, where he addressed various legal and governance matters, he clarified that despite the OSP’s independence, it still functions within the broader Attorney-General’s department.
Dr. Ayine referred to Article 88(3) of the 1992 Constitution, which grants the Attorney-General prosecutorial authority over the state, to justify his position on oversight.
“I think that it is only right that because he [Kissi Agyebeng] is exercising prosecutorial authority which belongs to me, under Article 88(3) of the Constitution, I should be in the known regarding his actions. So the OSP is one of the agencies under the Attorney General’s department.”
He further stated that at the appropriate time, he would request a detailed briefing from the Special Prosecutor, including updates on recent developments.
“And at the appropriate time, I will call for a briefing on everything that he has done, including the press conference that he held. I myself woke up to the press conference.”
