The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has allocated over GH¢101 million to senior high schools across the country to address food shortages.

This intervention comes after concerns were raised by the Conference of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) regarding the lack of food in schools nationwide. In response, the President instructed that food supplies initially meant for farmers in northern Ghana, who were affected by drought, be redirected to schools to ease the food shortage.

During a debate on the second batch of ministerial nominees, the Bawku Central MP reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing challenges in the education sector.

“The President, John Dramani Mahama, has already transferred over GH¢101 million to the secondary schools to deal with the purchases that he is talking about. I can show you evidence of the transfer that His Excellency the President is dealing with the issues in secondary schools,” Ayariga stated.

He went on to explain that the President had directed the redistribution of food supplies, saying, “He has directed that food that we had purchased to deal with some other problem, but because of the emergency involving secondary education, he has directed that the rice and the maize be distributed to them.”

Ayariga emphasized that schools no longer faced food shortages, adding, “So the schools don’t have a problem with food. They have enough food. And then, in addition to distributing the food to the secondary schools, he has made direct transfers to secondary schools so that they can purchase ingredients that they need to provide food for the students. So we have started implementing the promises.”

The funds and resources allocated are part of the government’s efforts to ensure that senior high schools can continue to provide for students, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
