Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, has called for stronger systems and support structures to help Africa fully benefit from its rich pool of innovative talent. Speaking at the Cambridge Africa Business Conference on Saturday, May 17, 2025, he stressed that the continent’s challenge is not a lack of innovation, but rather the absence of mechanisms to grow, support, and sustain those ideas.
The event, held under the theme ‘Africa’s Digital Transformation: Building Resilient Economies Through Innovation’, provided a platform for Dr. Bawumia to highlight the gap between creativity and scale. He explained that Africa is full of bold ideas and ambitious minds, but limited access to capital, infrastructure, and trust makes it difficult for these innovations to thrive.
Dr. Bawumia imagined a future where African businesses compete and connect globally—where a tech company in Nairobi could offer services in São Paulo, and a shea butter group in Tamale could export directly to Japan using digital tools like blockchain. According to him, such progress is possible if systems are built to support innovation at every stage.
He concluded by urging African leaders to invest in strong institutions and ecosystems that reward creativity, build trust, and open doors to global opportunities. With the right support, he believes African innovations can become a driving force in the world economy, not just rare success stories.
