Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah has strongly criticised former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for refusing to take personal responsibility for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In recent comments, Dr. Bawumia attributed the NPP’s electoral loss to several factors, including the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), the unpopular Electronic Levy (E-Levy), internal divisions within the party, and what he described as the “arrogance of power.” He maintained that these challenges significantly eroded the public’s trust in the party.

However, responding in a Facebook post on Sunday, April 27, Dr. Boamah criticised Bawumia’s stance, accusing him of deflecting blame rather than accepting his share of responsibility.

“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything & everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical of the NPP’s economic mess!” Dr. Boamah wrote.

The Defence Minister’s remarks come at a time when Dr. Bawumia’s leadership of the Economic Management Team during the NPP administration is facing renewed scrutiny. Critics, including Dr. Boamah, argue that the severe economic challenges under the NPP government were central to the party’s downfall at the polls.

Several political observers also share the view that Dr. Bawumia’s management of the economy significantly contributed to the NPP’s loss, reinforcing calls for greater accountability among the party’s former leaders.
