Day-in and day-out personal and individual commendations are poured on the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, known by many as the ‘Digital Man’ for his unbelievable strides at ensuring the Ghanaian economy is formalized through digitization.

Recent to join the many hands and mouths acknowledging this innovative approach to economic development by the government is a not-for-profit organisation “You Know Ghana” (YKGH).

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, 18th February YKGH lauded Dr Bawumia and government for spearheading the digitisation agenda to formalise and transform Ghana economy and further bring about inclusion.

YKGH posited in a tweet
“All jokes aside, I don’t think there has ever been a politician who truly believes in using IT to transform the way government conducts its business like Bawumia”.

The group (YKGH) was critical on Ghanaians who fancy applauding non-Ghanaians but fail to acknowledge their own when they are excelling.

“While we applaud others around Africa, let us acknowledge our very own Mr Digital Bawumia” YKGH added.

The applaud was occasioned by the launch of a new Mobile App for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) dubbed ‘ECG-Power’ on Tuesday, 18th February 2020 by Vice President Bawumia.

With this app, about 2.8 million out of the 3.8 million ECG customers will immediately have the convenience and an easier way of buying electrical power and making payments for same, as well as Smartphone ECG services via their mobile phones.

Per the design, both users of smartphone and non-smart phone can buy power through their mobile phones. Smartphone users can download the App on Google play store or Apple. Those with “yam” phones can simply dial *226# to buy credit for their meters and can also buy credit for friends or relatives using the mobile App.

The digitization touch of Dr Bawumia has been felt across many sectors of the Ghanaian economy which made movers and shakers in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) industry in Ghana adjudge him as the Digital Leader of the Year 2019.

Some of the digital initiatives Dr Bawumia led comprise the introduction of Zipline Technology’s, a medical drone programme, which is helping in healthcare delivery especially to the hard-to-reach communities of Ghana, introduction of a Paperless Port system which has reduced turn-around times at the country’s ports, the digitation of DVLA to eliminate corrupt practices, the introduction of a Digital Property Addressing System, issuance of a National ID card and the provision of banking services to every resident of Ghana through the innovative Mobile Payments Interoperability platform among others.
