A man has reportedly set a four-bedroom apartment ablaze, leaving his ten-year-old stepson dead after which he attempted suicide.

The Tuesday dawn fire outbreak which swept through the four-bedroom apartment also left his surviving girlfriend and two children, including twin sister of the deceased with minor injuries.

The suspect in his early 40s was said to have locked up the victims in the room, sprinkled gallons of fuel in and around the apartment and got it burnt.

A struggle to rescue the victim was however unsuccessful as he got trapped in one of the rooms. He was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials from the Ghana Police and National Fire and Rescue Services.

Three other tenants were also affected as items running into thousands of cedis were destroyed in the chaotic incident. They have been forced to seek shelter elsewhere as it appears their hopes have been dashed .

Although it is still unclear the cause of the action, the incident has left residents at Medoma in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region in a state of shock.

Meanwhile, firefighters have recovered the charred body of the victim and deposited same at the Ankaase Health morgue. A gallon containing a flammable liquid suspected to have been used to commit the crime was also also retrieved some three meters away from the scene.

The suspect who also sustained minor is receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) under police guard as at press time.
