The once peaceful community of Ngama Gberuk in the Bunkpurugu District of the North East Region has been thrown into turmoil following violent clashes that have left several individuals injured and properties destroyed.

The conflict reportedly arises from a chieftaincy dispute between two local clans, the Nandouk Teeb and Maan Teeb. Sources indicate that tensions escalated when members of both clans traveled to Binde, the seat of the Pibrana, the Paramount Chief of the area, to partake in enskinment ceremonies.

The enskinment process, a significant cultural tradition where individuals are formally installed as chiefs, often brings heightened emotions and celebrations within communities. Following the ceremonies, the newly enskinned chiefs began their journey back to Ngama Gberuk.

However, according to reports, the group was ambushed by unidentified gunmen en route to the community. Eyewitnesses describe how the attackers opened fire on the clans, creating chaos and leaving many injured.

“In the ensuing panic, several people sustained injuries,” an eyewitness revealed. “Some were wounded by gunshots, while others got hurt trying to escape the attack.”

The violence did not stop there. Multiple homes and properties in the area were set ablaze, with flames consuming livestock, personal belongings, and other valuables. The destruction has displaced numerous families, forcing them to seek refuge in nearby communities.

The clashes have further fueled fears of reprisals between the factions. Reports suggest that retaliatory gunfire has already been heard in parts of the area, worsening the already volatile situation.

“The community is gripped by fear,” a resident shared. “Most people are too scared to leave their homes as tensions continue to rise.”

As the situation remains precarious, local leaders and authorities are yet to intervene effectively to prevent further violence and restore calm.
