Over 380 diplomatic passports have been returned following a directive from the President to enhance accountability and improve the management of such documents, Citi News has learned.

The directive, issued by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President, called for the return of all diplomatic and service passports that were issued under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. The recall officially concluded on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Sources within the Ministry revealed that most of the passports were returned by Thursday, January 23, one day before the deadline.

This recall is part of the current administration’s efforts to ensure that diplomatic passports are used solely for their intended purpose: representing the state on official matters abroad.

Diplomatic passports provide holders with privileges such as expedited customs clearance and exemptions from certain taxes and duties in foreign countries. However, improper use of these passports could pose risks to national security and harm international relations.

The recall was prompted by reports indicating that some individuals who no longer hold official positions were still in possession of diplomatic passports, raising concerns over potential misuse.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing stricter measures to prevent any future misuse of diplomatic passports.
