The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action regarding allegations of illegal mining involving the Member of Parliament for Aowin, Oscar Larbi.

The coalition, made up of media representatives, labor groups, faith-based organizations, and traditional authorities, expressed its concerns in a January 30 letter addressed to the Jubilee House. The petition calls for urgent intervention to address the growing concerns surrounding illegal mining activities in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, located in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region.

Traditional authorities in the area accuse Oscar Larbi of bringing illegal miners into the reserve, leading to environmental destruction. The coalition emphasized that these activities have caused severe degradation, including the loss of vegetation and significant deforestation.

As part of its demands, the coalition is urging President Mahama to initiate an independent investigation involving key institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Minerals Commission. Their goal is to uncover the truth and ensure accountability for any individuals or entities responsible for the destruction.

Additionally, the coalition is calling for immediate action against any MP or government official found to be engaged in illegal mining.

The petition has also been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The coalition stressed that addressing these allegations is crucial to maintaining public confidence in the government’s commitment to the fight against galamsey (illegal mining).
