COTVET Commemorates World Youth Skills Day

Even as the world is being ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) would like to salute the youth as we celebrate the World Youth Skills Day 2020 under the theme “Skills for a Resilient Youth”.

The United Nations has designated the 15th of July of every year to commemorate the acquisition and development of skills in young people. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the important role skills acquisition by the youth plays in national development. If global economies are to recover and the unemployment created by the pandemic reversed, then skills acquisition by the youth needs to be highlighted.

TVET is crucial to winning the war against this pandemic because it can equip the youth with the skills for self-employment. In addition, if there is the need for industries to shift their production in response to the pandemic, TVET increases the responsiveness of the youth to these changes.

Also, concepts like lifelong learning, work-based learning and recognition of prior learning means that TVET makes the youth more resilient and responsive to changing conditions.

The World Youth Skills Day is aimed at recognizing the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing current and future global challenges.

We recognise the immense benefits our country can gain from promoting TVET and thus we are committed towards improving TVET in Ghana. We are taking conscious steps to make Ghana a centre of excellence in TVET and to make Ghana globally competitive within the TVET ecosystem.

This commitment is clearly shown in government’s quest to revamp TVET and make it more attractive with massive investments in TVET infrastructure and several marketing campaigns to change negative perceptions about TVET in Ghana.

Hearty congratulations to all our youth who keep making us proud. Ayekoo
