President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The announcement, made on the NCA’s official Facebook page on Friday, January 24, comes after the resignation of Joe Anokye, who previously held the position.
Joe Anokye, who served as Director-General under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stepped down earlier this month, sparking speculation about his future plans.
As the new Acting Director-General, Rev. Fianko takes on the responsibility of building on the achievements of his predecessors while addressing the dynamic needs of Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
The NCA, tasked with regulating telecommunications, broadcasting, and electronic communications in Ghana, plays a vital role in ensuring the country’s digital landscape remains competitive, inclusive, and forward-looking.
Rev. Fianko’s leadership comes at a time when Ghana’s telecommunications industry is undergoing rapid changes, including the expansion of broadband access, the deployment of 4G and 5G networks, and growing consumer demand for improved services.
In his new capacity, he is expected to drive initiatives that enhance regulatory policies, promote innovation, and tackle critical issues such as data protection, cybersecurity, and fair competition within the industry.
One major challenge awaiting his attention is the ongoing discussion around spectrum allocation, with calls for a fair and equitable distribution among players in the sector.
Rev. Fianko’s appointment marks a new chapter for the NCA as it continues its mission to strengthen Ghana’s digital infrastructure and ensure sustainable growth in the communications industry.
