The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to act swiftly in restoring discipline across senior high schools nationwide, following what he describes as a disturbing surge in indiscipline within the educational system.
Addressing school heads during a meeting in Sunyani, located in the Bono Region, the Minister expressed deep concern about recent developments, pointing specifically to a shooting incident at the SDA Senior High School in Kumasi as a worrying indicator of declining discipline in schools.
He referenced the shooting, which left a student critically injured, as a serious wake-up call for the education sector. “It leaves much to be desired,” the Minister said, stressing the urgent need for reforms aimed at curbing such behavior in academic institutions.
Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that the Director-General of the GES, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has the full support of the government to introduce and enforce necessary changes that will help restore order in schools.
“He has our full policy support to enforce those directives. So, the ‘unGhanaian’ development of shooting in Kumasi, the Director General of the GES has the full support of the government for you to strengthen your inspection in order that guns, knives, and other violent tools are not found in our schools,” the Minister stated.
His remarks follow the tragic case of Suzi Adwoa Penamang, a 16-year-old student of SDA SHS, who was shot by a fellow student. The family of the young girl is now urgently seeking financial support to help her receive the necessary medical treatment, fearing she could lose her sight as a result of her injuries.
The Minister’s call to action comes amid increasing public concern about safety and discipline in Ghana’s schools, prompting renewed focus on effective supervision and preventive measures to protect students and staff alike.
