The growing presence of foreign competitors in Ghana’s construction industry has raised concerns among industry stakeholders, who worry that local businesses may struggle to compete effectively.

In response, many are calling for stricter enforcement of government regulations to protect local professionals and businesses.

Under Section 5(1) of the Architects Act 1969 (NLCD 357), the Council is responsible for maintaining high standards in the architecture profession and ensuring the integrity of the industry.

Speaking at the Ghana Institution of Surveyors’ Annual General Meeting in Accra, Charles Amissah Koomson, Managing Architect at Multi-Build Consult Limited, highlighted the importance of safeguarding the interests of local professionals.

“The construction industry in Ghana is witnessing an influx of foreign professionals, and while this is something beyond our control, it brings healthy competition to the market,” Koomson stated. “However, we must tighten our regulatory frameworks to ensure that foreign professionals possess the necessary qualifications to practice in the country.”

He further stressed the need to enhance the skills and capacity of local professionals while also seeking opportunities to export their expertise to other markets.
