The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has unveiled plans to introduce a courier system aimed at resolving the backlog of 70,000 uncollected passports.

According to Ablakwa, an immediate audit will be conducted to identify applicants and ensure that all unclaimed passports reach their rightful owners.

“We will roll out a courier system so that applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. There must be a clear indication of who the applicants are, and if addresses are available, we will call them,” he stated in an interview with TV3.

In addition to the courier system, Ablakwa emphasized the importance of digitization and operational reforms at the passport office. He believes these changes will enhance efficiency and speed up processing times.

Addressing the issue of Diplomatic Passports, the minister expressed concerns over the current issuance practices. He stressed that such passports should be strictly reserved for government officials and foreign service personnel.

To prevent misuse and uphold the country’s international reputation, Ablakwa announced plans for a thorough review of the diplomatic passport issuance process.
