The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully reclaimed strategic parcels of airport land following a favourable ruling by an Accra High Court in a case involving the McDan Group of Companies.
The judgment, handed down on May 6, 2025, restores full ownership and access to over 16 acres of land previously occupied by McDan subsidiaries. The properties, which span approximately 10.63 and 5.66 acres respectively, are located near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International.
The land had been under the control of McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited—both affiliated with the McDan Group—since 2012. In February 2025, GACL initiated legal proceedings against the two firms, citing persistent breaches of lease terms and unpaid ground rent.
As part of the suit, GACL sought to recover $26,296 in rent arrears and requested a permanent injunction to bar any future interference by the McDan entities. The company later pursued a summary judgment, asserting that the defendants lacked any legitimate grounds for defense.
The court agreed, granting GACL all the reliefs it had requested, including re-possession of the land and GH¢50,000 in legal costs to be paid by the defendants.
This development follows an earlier dispute in December 2024 when operations of McDan Aviation at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were halted due to unpaid debts. Although those debts were subsequently settled, the land ownership issue remained unresolved until this recent ruling.
A GACL official hailed the decision as a major victory for public asset protection, stating that the reclaimed lands represent a significant step toward safeguarding state property and promoting responsible land use.
The company credited the outcome to strong collaboration between its Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who led the asset recovery initiative.
With the land now back under its control, GACL is expected to explore new development opportunities, including airport-related projects or partnerships, in line with its broader goals of infrastructure growth and revenue enhancement.
