Ghana and Canada have reached a landmark air transport agreement, paving the way for increased connectivity, trade, and tourism between the two nations.

The agreement, announced by Canada’s Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, the Honourable Anita Anand, marks the first official aviation partnership between the two countries.

Under the agreement, airlines from both Ghana and Canada can now operate scheduled air services with greater flexibility. The deal grants:

  • The right for both nations to designate multiple airlines for flights between Ghana and Canada.
  • Unrestricted access to serve any points within both countries.
  • A capacity of up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights for each country’s airlines.

The agreement, which takes effect immediately, is expected to boost business opportunities and improve travel options for passengers.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Speaking on the agreement, Minister Anita Anand emphasized Ghana’s growing importance as a trade and travel partner for Canada.

“Ghana is a growing market for Canada, and I am pleased to see this first agreement open the door to new opportunities for travellers and businesses in both countries. This agreement will connect more passengers and strengthen our cultural and commercial ties,” she said.

The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, highlighted the deal’s impact on trade and investment.

“The newly finalized Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Ghana represents a significant step forward for both nations. This agreement will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth. For Canada, it provides critical support for our exporters, opening doors to the dynamic West African market and enabling Canadian businesses to meet global demand for their products.”

Economic opportunities

The agreement aligns with Canada’s Blue Sky Policy, which promotes competition and sustainable air travel expansion. It also builds on strong trade relations between the two countries.

In 2023, two-way merchandise trade between Canada and Ghana exceeded $380 million, with Canadian exports totaling $281 million and Ghanaian imports reaching $99.8 million.

With this agreement now in effect, airlines and businesses in both countries are expected to capitalize on the increased connectivity, unlocking new opportunities for travel and commerce.
