Efforts to restore Ghana’s presence in the skies have gained renewed momentum, as the government prepares to launch a high-level task force aimed at fast-tracking the establishment of a new national airline.

This strategic step reflects a strong renewed commitment by the authorities to bring back a flag carrier after multiple failed attempts over the years.

Ghana has not had a functioning national airline in nearly 20 years. The country’s original carrier, Ghana Airways, which began operations in 1958, was grounded in 2004 following mounting operational debts and a ban imposed by the United States. Its short-lived successor, Ghana International Airlines, operated from 2005 until shutting down in 2010.

Fresh hope emerged in September 2022 when the government named Ashanti Airlines as its strategic partner in the airline relaunch. This development sparked optimism for the revival of a rebranded “Ghana Airlines” and generated interest from various stakeholders in the aviation industry.

Now, under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, a dedicated task force will soon be inaugurated by the Ministry of Transport. This team is expected to play a central role in attracting new investors and building partnerships to support the airline’s launch.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, speaking earlier this year, emphasized the government’s eagerness to pursue collaborative ventures. He acknowledged that “the country’s current economic constraints make it difficult to pursue the initiative independently,” underlining the importance of shared investment and cooperation in bringing the national airline project to life.
