The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) could be cut off the national grid over a whopping debt of GHC25 million to power distributor Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This was brought to the attention of the President of the West African nation Nana Akufo-Addo by the Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh.

According to him, the GH¢25 million debt owed the ECG by GBC had dire consequence also for National Security Council if not paid promptly.

He said his outfit had already initiated the processes to make GBC a public service broadcaster by setting up a committee to work with the Ministry of Information to look at how to restructure GBC and make it the public service.

He, however, indicated that lack of funding was dragging the process and therefore appealed to President Akufo-Addo to help address the problem.

Be responsible

On his part, the Ghanaian leader Nana Akufo-Addo cautioned journalists in the country to be responsible and circumspect in their reportage.

He said though the country’s environment generally supports the work of the media, practitioners ought to be decorous in their work.

“We want a free media and also a responsible media. That understanding of your work is one that a majority of Ghanaians will support. We want a free media and a responsible media that checks its fact as much as possible to portray situations as they are and not a media that is inventing things to serve very short term broken measures,” Akufo-Addo said at the end meeting.

Nana Akufo-Addo has always reminded journalists to recognize their role in national development and avoid sacrificing their integrity to report untrue stories that could destabilize the country.

He again urged media owners to invest in the capacity of their staff to enable them to uphold the highest standard in the profession.
