Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has firmly denied accusations of conflict of interest after stepping in to represent suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo in an ongoing legal case at the Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice, through a suit filed on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, is requesting an interlocutory injunction to stop all actions by a committee set up to probe multiple petitions for her removal from office. She is also urging the Supreme Court to bar two of its justices—Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu—from participating in the proceedings, raising concerns over their neutrality.

Responding to the allegations during an interview on Joy News that same day, Mr. Dame defended his actions, stating that he had acted lawfully and with integrity.

“It is about time that good men in this country speak for what is righteous and what is right,” Dame declared. “If there is any Attorney-General who, right from his appointment, has stood up for the judiciary and spoken against attacks on it, it is myself. It is not right and must be corrected. It is about time that proper things are stood for in this country. We cannot let people mislead the public and let it go uncorrected.”

The legal filing, submitted by Dame on behalf of the Chief Justice, lists the following as defendants: Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah.

Justice Torkornoo is asking the Supreme Court to restrain the committee—comprising the second to sixth respondents—from proceeding with the inquiry into the petitions for her removal. She was suspended from office by President John Dramani Mahama under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The case has sparked significant national attention, not only for its legal implications but also for the political and judicial questions it raises.
