After spending almost ten years in detention, Gregory Afoko, a prime suspect in the 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been granted bail by the High Court in Accra.
The court set bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties, marking a major turning point in a legal battle that has lasted nearly a decade.
On February 17, Afoko filed a fresh bail application before the High Court, making it the third time he had sought bail during his nine-year-long trial.
Afoko was arrested in 2015 and accused of conspiring with others to kill Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his home in Bolgatanga. The trial officially began in 2019 and concluded in 2023. However, the jury returned a hung verdict on both charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, leading the court to order a retrial.
Following the verdict, Afoko was re-arrested and denied bail. However, on Friday, his legal team argued for his release while awaiting trial.
Although his bail is seen as a significant step forward for his defense, the legal process is still ongoing as the state continues its prosecution.
