The Headmaster of the St. Charles Liwanga R/C Junior High School has been arrested after he turned himself to the police.

Police at Saboba in Ghana’s Northern Region confirmed the arrest and stated that he is assisting police investigations into the circumstances that led to the drowning of some students of the school.

The victims died when two canoes they were using capsized on the Oti River, Friday.

Although local media reported 10 deaths the police clarified that eight bodies have been recovered as at Saturday, November 13.

Manslaughter charge

Bodies are still being searched for by search parties as some students remain missing. The students, numbering 31 had gone to harvest rice from the farm of their headteacher and were returning to Saboba when the disaster occurred.

The brother of the headteacher had indicated that the family could not trace him but updating JoyNews, Saboba District Police Commander, ASP Shine Zoiku said the headteacher turned himself in this morning and is being detained.

“The number that got drowned is nine. Yesterday we retrieved seven and today we got one… For the meantime we are cautioning him with the appropriate charges and it’s likely he will be arraigned before court on Monday”, ASP Shine Zoiku told Joy FM in an interview.

“He would be charged with manslaughter”, he stated.

The dead bodies have been moved to the Yendi hospital for preservation as local divers search for other remaining victims.

Drowning incidents are common in Ghana especially down south where illegal mining is rife. In October, at least four people died when their boat capsized in the River Offin in the Ashanti Region.

Their bodies were later pulled out from the water body after nearly three days of search.
