Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 election, has issued a public apology following controversial remarks comparing the achievements of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to those of the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a statement released on July 12, 2024, Dr. Prempeh clarified that his comments made on July 9 in Kumasi, which were intended to highlight President Akufo-Addo’s impact, were not meant to disrespect Dr. Nkrumah or any other former heads of state.

He acknowledged the varied reactions elicited by his remarks and emphasised his respect for Dr. Nkrumah and other past leaders, including his own grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor.

“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” the statement read. Dr. Prempeh expressed sincere regret for any discomfort caused by his comments and apologized for the concerns raised.
