The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has underscored his ministry’s firm commitment to clearing beggars and street dwellers from major cities across Ghana as part of a nationwide effort to restore order and public decency.

During a visit to the Northern Region, the minister revealed that a broad operation targeting five major cities—including Tamale—will soon be rolled out in collaboration with the country’s security agencies.

Speaking on Thursday, May 22, at the commissioning of a newly constructed four-storey, 24-unit apartment complex for the Ghana Immigration Service in Tamale, Muntaka emphasized that the initiative aims to bring sanity to urban streets.

He disclosed that a recent enforcement exercise in Accra resulted in the arrest of over 2,000 foreign nationals involved in street begging. “By the close of this week, we should be able to finish removing all of them,” he stated. According to him, nearly half of those apprehended have already been repatriated, with the remaining individuals expected to be processed and deported within the week.

The minister did not mince words as he extended a clear warning to sex workers operating openly in public spaces. “The beggars are not a nuisance but a threat to our national security,” he said. “I can assure the rest of them that they either return to where they are coming from, because very soon, we are coming after all of them, including the prostitutes who are parading on almost all our streets.”

In a final warning, the Asawase MP advised such individuals to leave voluntarily or face enforcement action. “We will not rest on our oars, we will go after them until we remove all of them,” he concluded.
