A joint police and fire service investigations have been launched into a second fire incident that occurred at Accra Academy, officials said on Wednesday.

A dormitory block named as the Alema Hall caught fire on Tuesday, destroying several personal effects belonging to the students.

It is the latest incident in a month that the same building in the single-sex school had been destroyed by the inferno.

A Regional Fire Commander in Accra, ACFO James Quao, who visited the scene Wednesday said a thorough investigation is underway.

“The most important thing is that we need to investigate the cause of the fire. We will not preempt and say this is the suspected cause – that is not part of our work. So we need more time. The previous incident is still under investigation.

“We need to do a thorough investigation so that we arrive at the cause. We do not want to rush and goof so that the public ridicules us. The public should exercise restraint, for us to establish the cause for us to come out perfectly,” he said.

Assurances

Though there were no casualty recorded, there have been growing concerns about the safety of students in the school.

Headmaster of the school, Rev William Garr told reporters, however that the staff will collaborate with the fire department until the cause of the fire is ascertained.

“It is the same building that was gutted by fire last two weeks and all students were evacuated from the place. All students are safe and I want to assure all parents that their children are safe. The students were at prep when the incident happened. I think the Fire Service will have to do proper investigations so we know how come the fire came up again because the first report has not been submitted as of today”, he told reporters.

Established in 1931, Accra Academy was the first private academy to be established in the Gold Coast, present-day Ghana.

The academy is one of the foremost secondary educational institutions in Ghana and operates as a non-denominational day and boarding boys’ school, located at Bubuashie, near Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region.
