Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary under ex-President Akufo-Addo, says former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is not refusing to meet the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). Instead, he is dealing with serious medical issues.
This follows a strong warning from the OSP, which ordered Mr. Ofori-Atta to appear at its office on Monday, June 2, or face possible extradition.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, June 2, Adjei said the former minister simply isn’t well enough to travel.
“It’s not that he doesn’t want to go. The problem is his health. The medical condition makes it risky for him to travel,” he said.
Adjei also confirmed that Ofori-Atta’s legal team has already submitted medical documents to the OSP and the Human Rights Court, explaining his condition and the surgery he needs.
He stressed that this is not a last-minute excuse. “His health problems began before the OSP’s request. The OSP can still speak to him and ask questions based on his situation,” Adjei added.
On Sunday, June 1, the OSP warned that if Ofori-Atta did not appear as ordered, he would be declared a fugitive and could be placed back on the wanted list. The OSP also said it might request an INTERPOL Red Notice—an international alert to help locate and arrest him.
Meanwhile, Ofori-Atta has officially asked the OSP to meet with him virtually due to his ongoing health problems.
