The Keta Divisional Police Command in the Volta Region has destroyed 24 maxim bags of suspected cannabis that were intercepted at Adzido beach within the Municipality.
According to Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Maxwell Agyemang, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency, the consignment was intercepted on December 29, 2023, after being dumped by unknown suspects. It was subsequently destroyed on Friday, April 25, 2025.
“We had a tipoff about the suspect, who dumped the cannabis at Adzido, and we intercepted it. Unfortunately, no arrest was made,” Superintendent Agyemang stated.
He explained that after the seizure, extensive investigations were conducted across the Keta Municipality to track down those responsible. However, no individual has yet been identified or brought to justice.
Superintendent Agyemang revealed that each of the 24 bags contained 30 wrapped pieces of cannabis, with each piece valued at approximately GH₵500. In total, 720 pieces were seized, amounting to an estimated GH₵360,000.
“The last time we conducted this similar exercise was on September 27, 2024, after we equally intercepted 78 maxim bags of marijuana at the same place upon a tip-off,” he added.
The Divisional Commander also disclosed that the Keta Divisional Police had engaged the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Wisdom Seade, in discussions aimed at launching a comprehensive drug education program. The initiative would focus on raising awareness about drug abuse and its harmful effects among residents, especially the youth.
He noted with concern that investigations revealed a worrying trend where many students from senior and junior high schools were involved in using substances like tramadol, “tamaking,” and cannabis, among others. “These drugs destroy their future progression,” he cautioned.
Superintendent Agyemang emphasized that the use of illicit drugs was against national laws and assured that the police would intensify efforts to combat drug abuse within the Municipality. He urged the public to report any activities related to illegal drug use that could endanger community safety.
Madam Elaina Annor-Agyapong, the Senior Narcotic Drugs Control Officer at Aflao, who witnessed the destruction exercise, also warned about the dangers associated with hard drug use. “The consequences of using hard drugs include sickness, mental disorder, death, imprisonment, among others,” she said.
She appealed to the youth to avoid the use of unprescribed drugs to secure a healthy and successful future.
