Two kidnapped Ghanaian women, including Ama Serwaa Konadu, have been successfully rescued through a coordinated effort involving the Ghana Police Service, the National Signals Bureau (NSB), and the Nigeria Police Force. The victims were featured in a disturbing video that circulated widely on social media, sparking national outrage and concern.
The rescue operation led to the arrest of eight suspects across Ghana and Nigeria. The joint task force tracked the kidnappers to various locations in both countries, working closely to locate and apprehend those responsible.
In an official statement, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the rescue and arrests, noting that further information will be shared as investigations progress.
“The Ghana Police Service expresses deep appreciation to the National Signals Bureau and the Nigeria Police Force for their strong collaboration and support during this critical mission,” the statement said.
Background to the Incident
One of the victims, 39-year-old Ama Serwaa Konadu, a well-known hairdresser and event decorator from Asiakwa in the Eastern Region, was abducted on Tuesday, April 22, after leaving home for work.
The following day, her captors sent explicit and violent videos of her to her family, showing her being assaulted with a machete. They claimed to be holding her in Nigeria and demanded a GH₵500,000 ransom for her release.
The family quickly filed a report with the Ghana Police and shared all the disturbing footage with authorities to assist in the investigation. Thanks to the swift response and international cooperation between security agencies, the victims have now been freed and are receiving the necessary support.
This rescue marks a significant success in the fight against cross-border crime and highlights the importance of regional collaboration in tackling kidnapping and human trafficking.
