Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has assured Ghanaians of his commitment to improving the welfare of retired footballers if his appointment is approved by Parliament.
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 30, Adams expressed deep concern about the financial and health challenges faced by former footballers, stressing the need for structured support to secure their well-being.
“We will encourage active sportsmen to contribute to a pension scheme. If I am approved, we will come out with modalities to see what we can do for those who have retired,” he stated.
Beyond player welfare, Adams also addressed the financial difficulties facing Ghana’s sports sector. He acknowledged the urgency of resolving the sector’s debt burden and promised to introduce reforms to ensure sustainability.
“I’m aware of the GHC468 million debt that must be dealt with. We will strategize to ensure that the National Sports Authority (NSA) plays its role as regards Black Stars funding to resolve the issues,” he assured.
Adams further pledged to engage key stakeholders and implement innovative solutions to strengthen Ghana’s sports industry, raising hopes for much-needed reforms that will benefit both active and retired sports professionals.
