Kufuor turns 83: Napo joins Ghanaians to celebrate an ‘outstanding’ former President

Ghanaians have been posting birthday messages to celebrate former leader John Agyekum Kufuor who turns 83 today.

People from far and near, including members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), have been sharing photos on their social media handle to honour the ex-President.

The country’s Energy Minister and NPP MP for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in a Facebook post describes the former president as one of Ghana’s “outstanding statesmen of our time whose great legacy has impacted thousands of lives in our country”.

“I am proud to call him my grandfather and a man who has taught and continues to teach and inspire me so much.

On the occasion of his 83rd birthday, I wish him more of God’s blessings and good health. Gentle Giant, may your grace, wise counsel and quiet dignity continue to inspire our beloved nation”, Napo, as he is affectionately called said.

Born on December 8, 1938, John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor is a Ghanaian politician who served as the President of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January 2009.

He was also Chairperson of the African Union from 2007 to 2008.

In the Fourth Republic Kufuor stood as the New Patriotic Party‘s candidate at the 1996 election, and then led it to victory in 2000 and 2004. Having served two terms in power, he retired from politics in 2008. He is popularly known as the Gentle Giant.
