Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his intellectual property and vocals to falsely portray his endorsement of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the 2024 election campaign.

Kwabena Kwabena, who initially collaborated with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008, voiced his frustration over the party’s unauthorized use of his work without his consent or any form of compensation.

In an emotional statement, the musician explained how the NPP had manipulated his work from 2008 and re-edited it to create the false impression that he had endorsed Dr. Bawumia.

“They picked something I did for former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008 and they went to the studio to doctor it, cut it and did whatever they could to make it seem as if I had done it in 2024, suggesting I had endorsed their candidate Dr. Bawumia and that was very bad,” Kwabena Kwabena stated.

The musician stressed that such manipulation was unprofessional and damaging to his reputation.

In an interview with NKG on OnuaShowbiz, Kwabena Kwabena further explained that while he worked with the NPP from 2008 to 2016, supporting former President Akufo-Addo’s vision, he never felt that the party had used his work inappropriately until the 2024 campaign.

“When an artist puts their career on the line to campaign for a political party, it is only fair their efforts are appreciated, but the NPP did not show appreciation,” he said, adding, “Between 2008 to 2012 to 2016 I wouldn’t say the NPP used my intellectual property and voice for their political purposes, but in 2024 I can say the NPP used my intellectual property and image to campaign while we had not agreed on anything.”

The musician revealed that the NPP did not consult with him or his management before using his work in their campaign. Despite attempts to initiate a discussion, no agreement was reached.

“They tried to contact me to have a conversation with me, but the conversation did not go through to a satisfactory end, there was no conclusion or agreement. Before I realized, they were advertising with my voice, my intellectual property, my everything, all over Ghana, suggesting I had endorsed their candidate, Dr. Bawumia,” Kwabena Kwabena explained.

He expressed his frustration, saying, “Nobody called me about it. They just campaigned with my vocals and everything. That I think is gross unprofessionalism.”

The musician’s management team soon realized that the NPP might have assumed their power gave them the right to use his work without permission. The incident left Kwabena Kwabena upset, particularly given the lack of compensation and the disregard for his rights in using his material.
