President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

The appointment, announced in a statement from the Presidency, was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State. Yohuno, a seasoned law enforcement officer, brings forty years of experience to the role and is expected to spearhead efforts to modernise and transform the Ghana Police Service.

“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernisation and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, noted.

Christian Tetteh Yohuno is a well-regarded figure in Ghana’s security sector, having held key leadership positions throughout his distinguished career. His experience includes overseeing high-profile security operations, combating organised crime, and leading efforts to improve public safety.

The new IGP takes over from George Akuffo Dampare, who served as Ghana’s top police officer since 2021. Dampare’s tenure was marked by significant police reforms and heightened public scrutiny over law enforcement practices. Yohuno is expected to build upon these reforms while addressing emerging security challenges, including cybercrime, political unrest, and the rise of transnational criminal networks.
