President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his confidence in Dr. Johnson Asiama’s leadership as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), despite opposition from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the legality and suitability of his appointment.

Dr. Asiama’s appointment has sparked intense debate, with the NPP raising concerns over his past legal challenges, particularly his involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank. Although he previously faced trial, the government later withdrew all charges against him. The opposition argues that his legal history undermines his credibility for the role, which requires the highest levels of integrity and trust.

However, at the swearing-in ceremony for Dr. Asiama as Governor and Dr. Zakari Mumuni as First Deputy Governor, President Mahama defended his choice, emphasizing the need for strong leadership to stabilize Ghana’s financial sector.

“Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis and the task ahead demands experience, foresight, and decisive leadership. With Dr. Asiama heading the Bank of Ghana, I am confident that we will rebuild trust in the institution, we will restore stability, and put our economy back on the path of sustained growth,” Mahama stated.

Expressing further confidence in the new BoG Governor, he added, “I trust him with this responsibility knowing that he will serve with greater diligence and excellence.”
