Former Ghanaian leader John Mahama has condemned recent attacks on a residential building on the premises of the Nigerian High Commission in Accra.

Armed men on Saturday, June 20, allegedly invaded the parcel of land on which the Commission was erecting a building and pulled down parts of it.

Traditional authorities at Osu in Accra, had already accused the Nigeria High Commission of trespassing on the land belonging to it.

Commenting on the matter, however, the former President said government must take steps to get to the bottom of the matter.

“Gov’t needs to urgently act & get to the bottom of the demolition of structures on the premises of the Nigerian High Commission,” Mr Mahama said in a tweet adding: “It beats my imagination how such a violent & noisy destruction could occur without our Security Agents picking up signals to avert the damage.”

The development has since sparked controversy amid fears that it could start a diplomatic row.

Some Nigerian residents in Ghana massed up at the scene to protest against what they describe as incessant attacks meted out to them.

But Mr Mahama further said in a tweet that: “This may just be another reflection of the pervasive insecurity & lawlessness Government itself has visited on the once peaceful Ghana. Meanwhile I call for calm and let’s please avoid any reprisal attacks.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has said it has initiated investigations into the incident. It has since called on the public to remain calm as it works to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

In a statement on Monday, the Ghana Police Service said its preliminary investigation shows that the said building was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

The Police Service also said it has made arrangements for armed guards to be on duty at the said property.
