President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Finance Minister to allocate funds for the second phase of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project to help curb the impact of flooding in affected coastal communities.
During a visit to Agavedzi in the Volta Region, Mahama assessed the devastation caused by tidal waves, which have displaced hundreds of residents in Salakope, Amutinu, and Agavedzi. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he assured the affected communities of immediate action.
“So I am going to ask the Finance Minister to include funding to start phase two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project,” Mahama stated.
He stressed the need for a two-pronged solution to address the crisis. “There are two things we need to do—start building phase two of the defence wall and, at the same time, resettle those whose houses have been affected. So we will look for a more suitable site for the resettlement project,” he added.
Mahama’s directive aims to accelerate efforts to protect coastal communities from future flooding while ensuring displaced residents receive proper resettlement.
