Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concerns about the adequacy of resettlement efforts for victims of tidal waves in the Volta Region, describing the current approach as ineffective and poorly planned.
During a visit to Agavedzi and other affected communities, Mahama assessed the destruction caused by the recent tidal waves, which displaced over 300 residents and damaged numerous homes. He criticized the ongoing resettlement project, reportedly funded by Ghana Gas, for being situated in a flood-prone area, making it unsuitable for long-term habitation.
“Before we came here, we went to the resettlement project that I believe or I’ve heard is being financed by Ghana Gas. I don’t think the project was well thought through. The work is shoddy, and even the area where the resettlement is being built is a flood area,” Mahama stated.
He further stressed the need for a more effective solution, warning that the current site would not withstand future flooding. “And so if it floods, it will affect those buildings too, and so those buildings are not fit for purpose,” he added.
Mahama called for urgent action, emphasizing a two-fold approach to address the crisis. “There are two things we need to do—start the building of phase two of the defence wall, but at the same time, resettle those whose houses have been affected,” he said.
